BlankI learned, during the restoration on Big Yellow (1960 300F), that the freeze plugs are a major weakness in the 413 engine design. As I understand it, the factory had their special tool to perfectly install the plug, and they would pretty much last the life of the engine. However, when we rebuild our 413s and redo the plugs, all bets are off. And who wants to rebuild the engine with the old freeze plugs? Shortly after Big Yellow was on the road, I was freeway cruising at 80 when POOF - a large cloud of greenish smoke appeared behind me. I quickly got off of the freeway and immediately knew that a freeze plug had blown. I ordered a set of the stainless steel plugs from Hot Heads Research and Racing as replacements. The T bar was reversed and slid in the open hole so that the flat side would tighten down to the inside of the engine block, and there have been no further problems. Spray paint them engine color after installation, and even the most eagle eye concours judge won't notice! They also have a brass version which works as well and is probably easier to deal with.
