Joe, Just did a brake rebuild on my 62 Sport and it stops on a dime, without any noise or handling issues. Things I would recheck before putting a hacksaw to the shoes (which I don't think should be necessary) are - make sure the backing plate where the shoes touch them is lubricated with a quality grease. Also, make sure you use a new hold down spring kit and check to see if the new shoes are ground to the correct curveature of the drums. Did you also "turn" the drums? If not, this should also be looked at. Lastly, quality shoes make a huge difference in performance.
