Re: [Chrysler300] For sale

Hi Troy,

For those of you who have no interest in this era of Chryslers and Chrysler Imperials I'd say push your "delete button" now. Should you have interest then read on.

I've done a bit more research and think I have this all correct so I would offer the following. Should I have something incorrect here please, anyone speak up. The '53 Dodge two door hardtop is quite different than a '53 or '54 Imperial Newport. Wheelbase is 114" vs 131.5 for the '53 & '54 Imperial Newport's which works out to about 1.5' shorter. The "C" pillar and rear window are definitely different along with grills, tail lights, bumpers, etc.

Here are some more facts regarding the '53 & '54 Imperial Newport's that I've not posted until now. Back in the day the longer wheel base on these cars over a New Yorker two door hard top was achieved via the front fenders. From the front cowl back the shell was pretty much the same as a NYer with the exception of bumpers, tail lights and of course trim. Both '53 NYer's and Newport's had a three piece rear glass and in '54 it went to a one piece. The '53 & '54 Custom Imperial Sedans were the same with an added divider between the front and rear doors which the NYer and lesser models didn't have. So with those cars you got a longer front end plus a bit more rear leg room. Also the '53 had a three piece rear glass and the '54 a one piece.

When the '55 Imperial (no longer listed as a "Chrysler Imperial") arrived the sedan achieved a longer wheelbase (130") vs (126") for the NYer. The extra 4" came from longer front doors and a longer roof which was unique to this Imperial alone and only done for one year. Imperial Newport's for '55 were also (130") like the Imperial sedan and the NYer, C300 and Windsor's all used (126") again. The 4" extension on Newport's was achieved via a longer quarter panel and is quite visible if you look at the distance from the bottom of the rear glass to the front edge of the trunk.

By 1956 the Imperial sedan wheelbase was (133") but the doors and roof section were the same as the (126") NYer and lesser models. The extra length once again was arrived via the rear quarter panels but it was also achieved by using a Chrysler '56 door hardtop rear trunk lid which was longer.

In 1957 as most of us know the Imperial series was it's own unique body and only shared some of the mechanics with the lesser models. Another bit of trivia is that the '57 Imperial was the first production vehicle to use curved side glass.

I tried to find the car listed with no success. The term "Crown Imperial" through the era only applies to the long wheel base eight passenger sedan of which 23 were built. Also, the limousine which was basically the same car as previously listed except it had a divider bulk head and glass between the front seat and the rear passenger area. There were 77 limos built for the 1954 model run. These cars were all built on a 145.5" wheelbase and had an overall length of 236.5".

There was a shorter version of the Imperial sedan built as a "Custom Imperial Town Sedan" which was 133.5" wheelbase. This also had the divider and some other unique features. Only 85 units of this car were built in 1954. I'm somewhat familiar with these cars as the person I share storage space with for our cars has a '53 example of the Town Sedan with only 47,000 miles which was owned by Alma Spreckels of Spreckels Sugar fame. I've attached a photo of this example along with a 1950 New Yorker Sedan, but not sure if it will come through on this post.

The four door sedan was listed as a "Custom Imperial and was built on a 133.5" wheelbase. A two door version of the Imperial was noted as a "Custom Imperial Newport" and was built on a 131.5" wheelbase. Two production numbers are listed for the Newport, 1249 and 1250.
