Cadilac's of the same era have heater cores that can fail - usually it is they split the solder down an edge, the core still perfect, and easily repairable by any good radiator man. An observation from me, and others please comment - the material/copper used in 50s-early 60s US radiator and heater cores is way better quality/durability, than the copper used in modern replacement ones? In the Cadillac's they used a copper than even now often will be as good, and heavy, as new, way more so than the rubbish we get here in Australia. My '62 E Type Jag still has it's originall alloy radiator - back in those days, be it copper or alloy, many often used way better material, thicknesses, than you ever see today, so if possible, try to keep you originals if it prudent. Plus most full size US cars had radiators well able to cope desert heats plus airconditioning demands without overheating - no new 'fancier' core is often needed. One often unseen real simple to avoid biggest enemy of radiators, and heater cores especially, in 50s-60s cars is mistakenly having a radiator cap of wrong pressure (release) - one stamped with a higher number than factory - say a 14 lb cap on a car than only originally used a 10. Obvoiusly though if the core corroded, it better to buy a new one, no matter the cap. Anyhow my point of writing now, is check the cap on your 300, make sure it is same lbs as supposed to be on car when new. Higher pressure can spell blowing your heater core long before your main radiator. I had to have my original rebuilt by a local (about 1 hr away) radiator shop. If I recall, it was about $70 to totally rebuild it. It was done in Saginaw Michigan. Hope this helps. His price estimate for the heater recore was almost as much as the whole radiator recore will cost! I seem to remember that not too long ago recoring a heater core was fairly reasonable. So I did a quick check on the Internet for a new one and see that a core for the non A/C cars is listed but I can't find anything for a 413 A/C car. Has anyone found a new heater core lately for an A/C car? I'm not sure if the 413s with A/C all used the same size. Or is a recore of the old heater core the only option these days? Mine isn't leaking yet but I wanted to be proactive. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks! Carl Bilter Cedar Rapids, IA heat index at 110 today - just like Florida except oil-free.
