Re: [Chrysler300] a/c



Well, I have a 56 New Yorker T&C with a rear roof mounted AC. It have all the signs of being factory installed. The pipes are neatly mounted on the frame with professional looking curves. To me it looks impossible that they could be fittet with the body on the frame. All wiring also look factory with the control switch placed exatly in the same spot as other 56 factory AC cars I have seen, to the left from the light switch on the dash. The hole for the switch look perfectly round just like other factory AC cars. I bought the car without engine and with the front clip off the car so no idea about how many blades on the fan. Everything indicates this came like this from the factory, there is no signs of a dealer instalation.

I had a long talk with the late George Merrick in Oregon a few years ago, and he could not recall seeing another 56 wagon with rear mounted AC ever. At that point I think he had 4 56 wagons in his collection. I don't have the IBM card on this car, but if somebody would be interested I will happily provide photos of the VIN tag and body tag. The car is now in storage partly in pieces, but it would be easy to inspect the installation.

  Factory rear "hung" units in wagons were not available from the factory to my knowledge before 1957 or 58. A few years back, a '56 was for sale and thought to be factory A/C because of that rear unit. Being somewhat interested, Chrysler Historical proved that wrong as I got the build sheet from them indicating w/o A/C. I also think the car may have been a Texas car originally and maybe someone there got clever with the overhead A/C installations.

  Terry: concerning the air flow......the factory rear hanging A/C units in wagons "suck" the inside air into the center on the unit where the evaporator sits and blowers push the air into the cabin via the smaller round directional holes that face front and rear. This concept was used for many, many years as the units changed very little.

  The data was from gills build records I'm sure. Nothing else would do.

  The wagon unit was huge and filled the width above the seats and down to the 
  window. Believe it brought cabin air in on the sides and pushed it forward 
  in the center just as the cars did but no outside air was used.
