The ’40 Ford is a prime example. In 1949, Fords, Mercury’s and Lincolns were restyled with slab sides. Any car that has had its bodywork extensively modified (especially like the ’49-51 Fords & Merc’s) can be referred to as a lead sled due to the large amounts of lead used to cover and smooth the welding associated with chopping the top, removing external trim, “Frenching” the headlights and taillights and even sectioning and channeling the main body. Today, we use fiberglass and Bondo. I don’t see many auto body modifications on late-model cars, but custom paint jobs, wheels, audio systems and air-bagged and slammed chassis seem to be the choice of those that want their ride to be unique.
