This has been covered before, but not for some time - I post this to all as others in the US will know the exact correct Type to use and can give 100% correct detail, BUT FOR SURE I REMEMBER DEXRON IS NOT SUITED TO cast Iron Torqueflights BECAUSE IT ALLOWS CLUTCHES TO SLIP TOO MUCH COMPARED TO THE CORRECT FLUID - the correct fluid suits both Chrysler and Fords of that era. The Dexron I and IIs will see the trans work, but it likely will fail prematurely - the clutches being the main causes - over to others more 300ly re this topic - it maybe should be a Club Tech page item re what types in what common Brands are correct, if not up there already? Hi Brant, I am sure you will get different opinions on this issue. I believe that most of today's transmission shops will say that Dexron is fine. Do a search and you will see many opinions . That's what I did and from what I read on the subject I believe that our transmissions should be using ATF Type A. Again, this is only my opinion. Type A fluid is usually hard to find. I brought a couple of cases from Warren Oil. Here is a link to their company if you decide to use Type A and can not find it locally. http://www.warrenoil.com/product_warren_trans.html Good Luck and Happy 300'ing Lion Charlie Valentine 300G, 1962 Sport Convertible ________________________________ From: Brandt Jimerson <brandt300g@xxxxxxxxx> To: Chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Mon, May 9, 2011 1:38:33 AM Subject: [Chrysler300] Correct A466 Torqueflite fluid is!!?? Hello to all in 300sville! Is the correct atf fluid for the A466 Trans Type F, A, or Dextron ll or Dextron lll, or !!?? I have a fresh new tranny that was built by Don V. and I'm scared that I did some damage. Here's the scoop: I start her up cold and Melissa (my G), goes immediately into any gear without hesitation (so far so good). Now (before engine warms up), I put her in D and carefully take off (don't want to race engine--still cold). Now as I take off gently she shifts fine through gears 1, 2, and 3. However, as long as the tranny is still relatively cold, when I come to a complete stop, the low reverse band doesn't apply for 'break away'. However, after the third or fourth time I come to a complete stop, she takes off now just fine (in 1st). Now, as for the 3 to 1 and 3 to 2 kickdowns, that's all fine and dandy (the 3 to 1s limit is about 30 to 32 mph), until after driving her for about 20 to 30 minutes ( with a lot of 3 to 1 tests...sorry...yikes), I am finally able to do a 3 to 1 at about 43 mph (which is all fine---listed in...I forget which book). After I drive her though like a 'normal human being', she appears to maybe cool down and now my 3 to 1 limit is back to 30 to 32 mph. WHY is that!? Is it my fluid? As I'm writing this, I don't know what type of fluid Doug (the local guy), put into Melissa so needless to say, I'll ask him tomorrow (Monday) and let you all know (or will find out from all of you and let HIM know!) Now this is kind of scary...I did a visual and a smell test on the fluid off of the dip stick and it was only a LITTLE bit brown. I hate to say it but it did (I think), smell a little burnt so if it's a question of hotrodding with the wrong trans fluid, please someone tell me that I MAY HAVE CAUGHT IT IN TIME, as long as I now use the correct fluid. Again, I'll let you know all what it was when I find out!! Sincerely, 300ly, and very concerned, Brandt H J with a G.
