There's actually plenty of R12 freon out there and available for around $10 a pound or so in the 30# tubes, so there is really no need to even consider replacement freons. The nice part about using R12 in your mid-fifties car is that your entire system - especially the condenser - was engineered around the use of the R12 type. And that compatibility will likely give you the very best results with respect to both cooling performance and long-term maintenance.
