My guess based on finding a few already that are faulty, is after you first check the vacuum switch on the intake manifold (if 300D still uses one - 300C do) is OK, then likely it will be the nuetral safety switch that is found on the side of the auto trans above the sump edge - look for a single wire running down to it - usually I think dark brown, and runs down on steering column side.
 
The round little switch - sort of looks a  bit like a larger master cylinder brake stop light switch - has a little tapered point inside the trans that moves when you select different gears.
It has a spring behind it that holds tension on it - that spring gets weak, and if you remove the assembly with say a large socket that fits, you should/may feel no real resistance to pushing that little taper part inwards if the switch is stuffed/dodgy/faulty.
 
I have bought a few on ebay, about $15 nos - you need the one with a nut type fixing that holds the wire on - not the more common seen one with multiple blade type connections.
 
Others correct me if I wrong, but I think if you try earthing the brown wire terminal that you should find on your starter relay near the battery, you should find it will start on key, if it is the trans switch that is the problem.

I'm having an unusual problem with my 300D.  It has happened twice now, in two days.  When I turn the key and press the neutral button, nothing happens; no noise, no click, no start.  When I use a screwdriver to engage the starter via the starting relay under the hood, even for a split second, the starter will engage.  Then, when I return to the cockpit, the car starts right up, using the neutral button.    Anybody got any ideas?  Terry McTaggart
