The external fresh air intakes are physically different between 1955 and 1956. They do look very similar until you see them next to each other. Also, they are not needed for A/C cars as you can run the A/C with these vents closed and it will recirculate the air within the car. There are levers inside the trunk to open and close these on both years. Didn't make a lot of sense to me as you would have to pull over get out, open the trunk and then move the lever to the desired position. I've attached a photo taken within the past week at a very nice '54 Imperial Custom Sedan that I looked at. This is an "original" example with factory air and you can see the similar levers inside the trunk. I sent the seller a note this morning asking for clarification/verification of the VIN and engine s/n. Caveat emptor. Curious about the 'intake' just below and behind the back window on the driver's side. For aftermarket, they would not have fabricated the a/c intakes, would they?? I think it would have been an under dash unit. Thoughts? It certainly could also be the number on the title, as some states did it that way. Some member who is interested in the car needs to ask the owner what the number is on the driver's door post. That, of course, is the actual VIN, from which we could determine if it came with factory air. A few C300s did. Note that the seller is also unsure re: dealer vs factory AC. 300ly, Gil Cunningham Very beautiful am in Tally, FL In a message dated 9/30/2011 10:40:28 P.M. I suspect the owner that has one of every year stated by the seller is Don Petty. I'd have to look at my file regarding the A/C and I don't have that handy at the moment. The term "Batwing" is incorrect and should be stated as "Deltawing", but this goes along with many "experts" talking about the Kelsey Hays wire wheels directly from the factory. It is a factory air equipped C300. Vin is 3NE551708. Needs complete resto but has the batwing (according to the seller). Car is in Wisconsin. Here is a link to the Ebay page: http://tinyurl.com/3lveaow And the item number: 320767316687 At $6,500 no reserve. (I would think the batwing and carbs are worth not-too-far south of that). Would be fun to see this one brought back to life! Enjoy your weekend, everybody.
