Just when you thought this thread was done - another email. Hit delete now if this is getting stale. So we've determined that the 300 letter car 2-dr. hardtops were never referred to as "Newports" by Chrysler (there's the 300 connection). After 1956, Chrysler didn't use the Newport name that I recall until the '61 Newport line was initiated as the entry-level Chrysler. Certain '55 and '56 New Yorker and Windsor models actually had the "Newport" script on the cars. Of note, the Imperial Newports actually never had any "Newport" script on the body but were referred to Newports in the advertising from 1951 through 1955. IMHO, they were among the most beautiful and finest automobiles ever produced. I had the pleasure of owning an original '55 Imperial Newport for over 20 years. Another name was applied to certain Chrysler Corp. hardtops in this era as well. From 1956 through 1962, Imperial 2dr and 4dr hardtops were known as "Southampton" in their advertising. Perhaps this served to further distance the Imperials from Chrysler as they were a separate make starting in '55. A truly regal name for another series of magnificent vehicles. It is well known that Chrysler experimented with a 2 door hardtop in 1946 with the Town & Country. But six examples doesn't exactly make it a true production model. They missed the boat with that one, and of course we all know that GM made the big splash with the Riviera, Holiday, and Coupe de Ville a few years later. The hardtop names became a bit confusing in the mid '50s when the names were extended to full model series in many instances. And then the 4 door hardtops arrived, adding to the confusion. Terry McTaggart wrote to me about excluding the Imperial. Good point. The Imperial began as a separate marque in 1955 and used the Newport name also at first. Before that, of course, it had been a Chrysler Imperial Newport. The 1955 Chrysler 300 (how's that for sneaking in the 300 related material into this email), as far as I know did not have any other name to indicate it was a hardtop. I never thought of it as a 300 Newport. It was just the Chrysler 300. Rich Barber, resident C300 expert, can you add to this?
