Our 1964 300K ram-engined convertible came shod with 8.50 X 14 bias-ply tires with 1-1/16? WSW?s. The spec?s say just ?Rayon?. Most of the tires on the car are now H78-14?s. Does anyone with a K having one or more of the original tires provide any additional information on the tires? 4-ply/6-ply? Goodyears? Model name of the tire? Special high-performance racing tires? Like owners of 1957-60 Chrysler 300?s, I?ve been trying to find a suitable radial replacement for the 8.50 x 14 tires?only with the narrower WSW. My question is why the apparent preference for the 235/75R14 size over the 225/75R14? Looking at OD?s, I find the original 8.50 x 14 has an OD of 28.10? (ref. Coker Catalog BFG tire); the P225/75R14 has an OD of 27.62? and the P2325/75R14 has an OD of 27.87? (ref Coker catalog Coker Classic and American Classic). Is the ¼? greater OD of the 235 important? Other than the normal radial bagginess, this only equates to 1/8? lower ride height. The 235 also has 0.26? greater tread width and nets over 1.55? wider tread width. Certainly, the 8.50?s look a little wimpy when viewed head-on?as compared to either of the radial tires. I?m not arguing for one size or the other, just wondering why the apparent preference for the 235. If and when Diamond Back starts offering the 235/75R14 tires, I?m assuming they will be available in the 1-1/16? WSW. I?ve also come up with this P225/75R14 tire: http://www.tiremonkey.com/Inventory/El%20Dorado%20-%20Golden%20Fury%20GFT%20 -%2048%20-%201230099.aspx A call to Tire Monkey resulted in me recording a phone inquiry and no response yet. Your information on the original 1964 tires? Your preference for 225/75R15 or 235/75R14 size and why? Am I missing any alternatives? Facts and opinions always welcome and thanks for either or both. Most American cars had 14 inch tires in the early 60?s!! That size has to be somewhat popular. There seems to be a lot of people waiting for those 14 inch tires, I would buy 5 now if they were available, so why the wait?? I was counting on this coming Spring to buy the tires as the car will be ready then...now late 2012 before the tires are available??...bummer. I was looking for an update on the 235-75R14 tire project. He is focusing on a new 225-75R14 at the moment, and in the spring he is moving on to the 235-75R15, and then to the 235-75R14 in the fall. His current projection has the 235-75R14 available "by the end of 2012". Thought you'd like to know where things stand.
