Time for a reality check here.  Just because many of these cars are worth
$100K now doesn't mean the owner paid that for it.  I've had my 300G for
over 30 years, it's a member of the family, I've had it longer than my
children, and bought it before I was married.  We've been though a lot
together and it gets very good care, storage and maintenance, and it's not
the only car I have to maintain.
 
Having said that, I don't just throw money at it anytime there is a
perceived need.  I don't know about you, but I've still got kids in college
(tuition up 40% in last 2 years) and my investments are worth half of what
they were 5 years ago, and I'd like to retire some day.  And here's another
thing Henry, just because a tire is more expensive, doesn't make it a better
tire or safer.  Coker tires are made in small quantities, and there has been
a lot of discussion about how they hold up.  
 
Do you think that just because you spent $2000 on a set of American Classics
that they are better or safer than a set of standard production Coopers at
$400 set, or whatever they would cost down under?  If so, you haven't done
your homework, and that is what this discussion is all about.  You don't
always get what you pay for, unless you know what you're buying.  Not
everyone that owns these cars is retired and rich and has nothing better to
do with their money.

I find it hard to understand how people can talk about $75 tyres and $20
shock absorbers for cars worth up to $100 000. Is that what you would buy
for a new Mercedes?

Just do a few sums about how much money you will spend on gas over the time
it takes for these items to wear out to put this into perspective....

Note that I had to pay $2000 for my set of 5 American Classics here in
Australia and it will cost $112 just to fill the tank. If I wanted to spend
$75 on tyres, I'd be driving an old Corolla!
