RE: [Chrysler300] 55 & 56 Water Pumps

My early ’55 C-300 water pump has the bosses for the a/c compressor, but there are no holes drilled into the bosses. I recall some discussion that the water pumps for the a/c cars had fewer impellers.

Don,

To my knowledge there was no aftermarket pumps for the '55-'56 engines, but I'm sure there are those out there who know more on this and will tell you there were. If so I'd like to know who they were.

These pumps were only used for two years as this was the beginning of the water jacketed cylinder heads. They are heavy and somewhat complicated to change out compared to the earlier ('51-'54) or later ('57-'58).

The two holes on the top of the passenger side of the pump were to accommodate the factory A/C compressor which was half the size of a VW motor. This style of pump can be used on non A/C cars simply by installing bolts in these two locations. Come to think of it I don't remember if they are actually tapped into a water passage.

In a conversation with George Riehl some years ago he stated there was a difference between '55 and '56 pumps and I think it could be spotted on the back side. At this time I can't remember what the difference was but in any case either will work on both years.

I can't comment on the starter without referring to parts books.

Hi All,
For the 55-56 experts out there. Did anyone offer aftermarket water pumps for these cars back in the day? I have 4 cores, and only 2 have Chrysler casting numbers (1537947). One of the others has PH-130 on the front, and nothing else. It also has a couple of holes on top that are drilled and tapped but plugged with a bolt and washer.
I have one starter I can't ID too. Part number 1627290 MDG 6002.
And last, do starter numbers 1642140 (MDF 6001) work on anything besides 56 Chryslers?
Thanks,
Don
