In ancient times, speedo cables were lubed with powdered graphite. Could get messy when poring it into the top of the cable housing, but it worked fine at sub zero temperatures when otherwise-lubed cables were squawking like a shoat under a gate. Certainly, some of the noise sometimes did come from the speedo housing itself as rotating members met contracting case. Rich Barber 55 Chrysler C-300 with a spasmodic 150 MPH speedo. I saw a new ZL1Camaro the other day with a 200 MPH speedo and the driver claimed he needed 90% of it. It has about a 380 CID engine with a supercharger. The new SRT8 392 Hemi comes with a 180 MPH speedo, needs it all and more without a blower. The horsepower race has come a long way since 1955 with Ford & GM having to supercharge their engines to compete with the hemi.
