Polarity of battery? Negative to ground, positive to starter relay BAT lug. All battery terminal clamps clean and shiny & tight. The apparent need for a battery replacement may have been due to an underlying electrical problem. Try a heavy jumper BAT to SOL on the starter solenoid to mimic the starter switch and eliminate the neutral safety switch. Should spin the starter but not start the car. Be sure to put car in neutral first. See pages 72 and 73 at: http://www.jholst.net/60-service-manual/electrical.pdf for the wiring diagram. Horn should work with key in on position. Power windows, seat, top, antenna headlights, taillights, dome/map light and stoplights should work without the key. Wipers, radio, turn signals, horn, backup lights, heater & defroster fans, gas guage require power through the ignition switch in the on position. Main feed comes from BAT terminal on voltage regulator via a connector to the B terminal on the light switch. >From the manual: 9. STARTER FAILS TO OPERATE a. Weak battery or dead cell in battery. b. Ignition switch defective. c. Loose or corroded battery cable terminals. d. Open circuit, wire between ignition ? starter switch and ignition terminal on starter relay. e. Faulty drive unit. f. Faulty solenoid or solenoid switch relay. g. Faulty starting motor. h. Armature shaft sheared. , Let us know what you find.
