Re: [Chrysler300] FIRM FEEL

How different were the earlier (56-7, for example) power steering gearboxes
from the later (say, 58-up) setups ? My 58 Plymouth p/s setup feels just
fine. Never driven anything earlier.

Hi Joe, I've been driving a 300G (and other era Mopars) for over 25 years.
To me, the light touch of the power steering is part of the character of
these cars. I drove a friend's G a couple years ago with the firm feel build
and I didn't like it. In my opinion, it didn't make the car steer any
"better" it only served to increase the effort required to turn the wheel.
Indeed, by making it harder to steer, I thought it made the car feel less
responsive.

Before spending the money, I would suggest you make sure your steering gear
isn't worn out, and that the rubber coupler in the steering column is in
good condition. These factors can make the steering feel loose on center. Be
sure you are not blaming the power steering system if normal wear and tear
is the culprit. You might like the original setup if everything is fresh and
tight.
