My 1962 Chrysler Service manual says to fill the pump with Brake Fluid ... BUT ...... I would answer your question with " Depending on the condition of your system ". If it's all brand new pump, hoses and cylinders then use ATF Dexron III. If you are adding fluid to the old system you may have to add brake fluid, if that is what is now in the system. You have to determine what's in your system. ATF and Brake Fluid don't mix too well. If you flushed out your old system completely, cylinders, hoses and pump then you could use ATF. The following was copied from the net. Note the WARNING about using Silicone Brake Fluid. FLUID-Most cars 1967 and newer use automatic transmission fluid, from 1962-67 they may have used either automatic transmission fluid or brake fluid. Brake fluid can be detected by its pungent odor and transmission fluid smells more like oil. Pre 1962 cars almost always came with brake fluid but should be checked because the type of fluid in the system may have been changed, mixing the types of fluid may result in parts failure. If you are replacing the complete system, the use of automatic transmission fluid is recommended, never use silicone brake fluid as this will void any guarantee. NOTE-Pumps and cylinders purchased from Convertible Top Specialists may be filled with fluid, this fluid will either be Dextron III automatic transmission fluid or mineral hydraulic oil. The fluids are compatible with each other but not with brake fluid. The complete system holds approximately 1 1/2 to 2 quarts of fluid, use extreme caution if your system contains brake fluid as it can damage the paint on your car. How to Install Top Cylinders & Pumps Tools & Supplies - 3 quarts of fluid. Cars older than 1953 use DOT-3 brake fluid. Cars 1953 and up use brake fluid or automatic transmission fluid. Cars prior to 1953 may use ATF if all new hoses have been installed. CAUTION - brake fluid destroys paint. A turkey baster is a great tool to fill pumps with a filler plug. You may also use an oil can or bleeder system. Caution - Never totally fill a reservoir with fluid. Cars with a filler plug should remain 25% empty. The air gap is required to prevent system damage or failure. Firewall pump reservoirs should remain 10% empty. Hope this information helps. Here is the link to their kit. http://store.convertibleparts.com/pmprestkit.html The kit sells for $ 23.10. A lot less than buying a new pump. It was easy to do. Just take apart, clean everything and re-assemble. The kit I received came with the 2 check valve ball bearings but did not come with the tiny ball bearing that hold the impeller on the shaft. Be careful when you remove the impeller. Do Not loose the tiny ball bearing.
