The Car Life road test of the J strikes me that they "calculated" a top speed of 130mph; it is not clear that they actually ran the car to top end. Our late President George Riehl said the J would do about 150 if you had enough open road, and that was probably as indicated on the speedo with his rebuilt "totally stock" engine in his black J. The facts are these: The J in the Car Life road test ran the quarter in 16.5 sec at 97mph. The mph sound about right; the time is a little slow (perhaps not the best launch). We know the J and K were among the lightest regular production letter car built and along with the ram K the only ones "mass produced" from the factory with short rams and headers (i.e. not counting the handful of 4sp Fs, short ram 400hp Gs, or dealer installed short ram Hs), which really helped in the upper rpm ranges. The ram K should have similar performance, but a K 'vert would be a bit heavier and therefore slower. My J had an old time slip in the glove box when I bought it from when it was run by a prior owner at the Minnesota Dragways, before that strip was closed in the 1980's, when it still had its original short rams and headers, and it ran the quarter in 15.41 sec at 99.88 mph. And my car doesn't have Suregrip. I've read in the past that no road tests were published for the K, either the FirePower 360 or the 390 ram. It contains comparisons to G's and H's. I was surprised that the indicated top speed of 130 MPH was not much more than that of the '55 C-300 (128 and change on the sand). Perhaps other published tests or personal experience tell a different tale? http://bpostwarclassics.runboard.com/t8152 I never did find a 1964 300K road test. Does anyone know of a credible 1964 Chrysler 300K road test?
