Digging around, I found some bulb spec’s. The 90 bulb is a round-head bulb, single filament double contact rated at 0.58 Amp, 7.54 Watt, 6 candlepower. The 1004 bulb is also single filament double contact rated at 0.938 Amp, has a slightly elongated bulb and is rated at 12 Watts, 15 candlepower. More Amps=more Watts=more candlepower= more heat. Chrysler had to deal with the materials they had and probably put a little hotter bulb in some applications in order to shed more light without primary concern over cooking the ivory plastic lenses. Like with the starter, the normal lights on period would be short as doors are opened and closed. For preservation of the lens sake, the 90 would be the better choice in dome and courtesy lamp applications, even though the original equipment may have been 1004’s. Alignment of the bulb and socket are also important as if the bulb touches the plastic lens, all bets are off. LED bulbs are increasingly available and would provide more light with less heat. Onward and upward. I would advise against using the 1004 for either the roof rail lights (2dr HT, 4dr HT), or the courtesy lights. Brighter bulb means more heat, which will discolor or melt the lens if left on for too long. That's what those brown spots are that you see on used lenses, BTW. Hi, George: According to the service manuals for '58 and '59, #1004 is somewhat brighter than the #90. In the '59, the 1004 is used for the dome light and the map light, while the #90 is used for the hand brake warning light. No specs are given for the rear courtesy lights on the convertible model. It appears to me the choice is the 1004 bulb.
