Those not (yet) faced with the challenges of finding replacement power steering hoses may wonder what it’s all about. While most hoses are of the proper length, the proper angles of the bends in the steel tubing ends is really important for proper routing and alignment of the hose when it is in place. Additionally, some hoses (’55-’56) originally came with a foam rubber cover over part of the hose--apparently to prevent the hose from rubbing against engine and/or chassis parts. Chrysler called these “bumpers” in their catalog, they are apparently no longer available, but can be simulated with foam pipe insulation. As the action of the power steering pump rotor will naturally produce little pulsations in the hydraulic system, I believe the hose diameter change in the middle of the hose is to break up and smooth out that pulsation. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the metal coupler that splices the two different diameter hoses together has a restriction in it to further break up pump-induced pulsation. I have an apparent original p/s hose for our ’55 C-300. The center coupler is brass and carries the proper Chrysler part number. I’m keeping it for reference. In the ’55-’58 parts manual, section 19-58-7 (http://www.jholst.net/55-58-parts-manual/steering.pdf Page 19-40) shows different hoses for different year Chryslers (different hoses for ’55, ’56 and ’57-’58). If you have a hose that fits and aligns well, be sure to keep it for a reference. You might have to take a new, similar hose to a hydraulic hose shop to get the right length, center coupler, end tubing lengths, tubing fittings and bends in the steel tubing.
