RE: [Chrysler300] Torqueflite oil leak

Would any of you out there advise any particular precautions to best seal this area against potential leaks in my newly rebuilt (but not yet run) 1957 cast-iron Torqueflite transmission?  Maybe Teflon tape on the threads?  Or Aviation Permatex #2 (non-hardening)?  Is the old spiral-metal speedo housing itself a potential leak source?  If so, do you think currently available black plastic spray-on leak-stoppers (RustOleum now makes one, similar to an Internet version) might be an appropriate precaution?  There are even cold-fusion wrap-on shrink-tapes that might be applicable.  Any thoughts?  All the above?!

Hi Bob,
On the 727 the speedo housing is pretty low on the extension housing, not so on the cast iron. It’s at about mid point on the X housing. Like Keith mentioned, there should not be a real lot of fluid flying around in there. As long as the speedo housing to case surfaces are clean and free of nicks, they should seal well. The band adjusting nuts do not have seals either, just metal on metal.

Not on a cast iron torque flite. It screws into the case as Anton said, and there is no gasket or O-ring.

Anton,

There should be an O ring around the assembly that the gear rides in.
Remove the bolt and pull it out, you should see the O ring and be able to
replace it. Not a difficult job.

Hi
I have a oil leak problem on the torqueflite in my G. Seems to come from the
speedometer gear. There is no kind of seal between the gear and the trans
casing. Is it meant to be a seal in between here? Or Is it just meant to be
torqued too the alu casing it sits in?
Hope anyone can tell me :-)
