I think that's a very good point regarding the misrepresentation--it's often rampant. In my experience, it ranges from relatively clueless sellers who actually think in their minds that their car is a prize, to those who will say anything to get you there to look at the car, hoping you will buy it even though it may be junk. The worst is when you are very clear about what you want or don't want, grill the seller to tell you the truth, and either drive or fly a long distance at considerable expense only to discover the car was not as described. That said, apparently what happened to Mr. Olson was just the reverse. After arranging to meet someone who was very interested in the car, and going through a lot of trouble and expense to make that happen, it appears the potential buyer just stood him up, and didn't even have the courtesy to tell him that he couldn't (or didn't want to) make it to the meeting. To me, that is just as unconscionable as misrepresenting the car. To me, one of the saddest things about the collector car hobby is the occasional (or perhaps frequent?) lack of integrity among either sellers or buyers. Fortunately, with respect to 300 collectors, there are often volunteers who will go look at a car that happens to be close to them, to provide an independent opinion before a prospective purchaser makes a long trip. I have personally benefited from that, and feel it is one of the many great attributes of the Club. Shannon 300F Convertible In a message dated 7/27/2013 7:10:43 A.M. As a buyer, I find that many cars are misrepresented, especially when agents are involved. You have to make contact and ask a lot of questions, have detailed pictures and documentation sent (if not local to the car) before determining if a car is what you are looking for.As a buyer, I prefer to deal with the owner, especially if they are knowledgeable and have owned it for a long period of time or know it's history. In my experience agents tend to grossly overprice vehicles and in most cases are unwilling to negotiate to what may be the actual fair market price. Not every buyer who chooses to follow up on an ad is going to buy that car, why would anyone expect a percentage much better than 90% unless they are offering the car at a bargain price? Yes, there are time wasters (tire kickers) out there for sure. I am certain that many of the buyers included in that 90% are actually legitimate buyers who decide, for whatever reason, that the car they are inquiring about isn't right for them. I find agents (dealers) are their own worst enemy. Ask a real estate agent how many times they show a house before it sells. Do they expect everyone who walks in the door is going to find it's exactly what they want and pay full price. I hope not. Hi, This is par for the course in my experience. Good to know it is not just me. Most buyers are time wasters. I run a collector car classified site for a living and have a number of people who advertise cars who are sellers agents. Apparently people really do not like dealing with buyers so pay these people to market their cars. One of those sellers agents told me that 90 percent of the people who respond to his ads are just useless time wasters. I guess that means he earns every penny of what he is paid for dealing with them. Would drive me crazy to do that all the time I think.
