Didn't finish the story before the Apple grabbed the partial and shipped it to you as an incomplete pass. I put an additional 6 quarts of oil in the crankcase and started the engine. Very soon the red light went out and stayed out even after I drained the extra 6 quarts back out. The lifter kept squawking but after several miles of driving the car, it found some lubricant and went mute. All is as well now as ever and the dash warning light is as dark as a black cat on a coal pile at midnight. Do not think any serious damage was done to the engine. Certainly thank the many of you that had suggestions and for Mike Laiserin for calling on the phone to chat al length during his busy day. As to the statement that "I don't need alcohol to be happy"………….maybe so, but it helps after a day under an old car using an old body.
