You don't say where you are finding the black carbon
substance. Is it where the switch connects to the wiring harness ?
I suspect that a foreign substance, such as WD-40, has
been sprayed into the switch or on the contacts. The black carbon is that
substance burning when electrical contact is made.
The switches and contact areas must be absolutely bone dry
and clean in order for them to function properly.
