[Chrysler300] Fender Mounted Mirrors Revealed on the 1963 & 1964 Chrysler

Greetings all:

This email is designed to explain the factory correct method for mounting the fender mounted mirrors on the 1963 & 1964 Chryslers.

The fender mount mirrors used on the 1963 and 1964 models were the same mirror assemblies used on previous year Chryslers. They came as either "remote control" or "manual", with the remote control units used exclusively on the driver (left) side and the manual units used mostly on the passenger (right) side, but sometimes installed on the driver side.

On 1962 and earlier Chryslers, the mirror assembly mounted directly to the top of the fender with the mirrors standing almost vertical. In 1963 & 1964, the design of the front fenders changed. Mounting the mirrors directly to the fender left the mirrors sitting at a strange angle from vertical, making them hard to see from the driver seat. To make the existing mirror assemblies usable, Chrysler designed special pedestals to fit between the base of the mirror and the fender. This raised the mirrors higher off the fenders. The outside edge of the mirror base was raised higher from the fender than the inside edge of the mirror base, which brought the angle of the mirrors closer to vertical and easier to see from the driver seat. The left and right mirror pedestals are unique in that they are mirror images of each other. And the fender mount mirrors should not be used on a 1963 or 1964 Chrysler unless the proper pedestal is installed with the mirrors. Mounting a manual mirror on the right side of a 1963 or 1964 Chrysler without a pedestal or with a driver side pedestal, makes the right mirror hard to use and throws off the symmetry of the mirrors to the casual observer of the car.

Attached above are pictures of left and right fender mount mirrors with proper pedestals as mounted on my 1964 Chrysler. Feel free to share any questions or comments.
