Re: [Chrysler300] Engine mounts and 300H Transmissions Al 727

Let me add this in here for those of you who might want to add an external cooler to a later model car/truck.
I always add one, but let me caution you about this. I replaced the Radiator on my 1993 Dakota, which had the internal cooler as per stock.
A year or so later the internal cooler ruptured (damn China crap) and I had a cocktail of ATF and Anti-freeze running thru both.
The Rad had a lifetime warranty from Auto Zone, but what a mess. Lots of flushes $$$$ to clear it all out.
Now I just skip the trans cooler, go with only the aux. one and have had no problems.

Our older Radiators are quality and this would not be a likely problem, but if you use a replacement one from China, beware.

It is my understanding that the "Stock" trans cooler was only to the Radiator internal cooler and then back to the transmission. If you have a "Trans cooler" in front of the radiator, this may be an add on unit and could possibly be "Not" factory. The cooler in front of the radiator may/or may not be factory original. I know they have offered these additional trans coolers over the years, I am currently looking for one my self, the factory trans cooler.  One thing about the factory units, they are hard mounted with brackets to the radiator support. So if yours is mounted hard plumbed, with nuts and bolts and steel brackets it may be factory. If yours is tie wrapped with hose clamps and rubber hoses, well this maybe is not factory. That being said the extra cooling is always a good thing, I've been looking for the "Factory" external trans coolers as well as the Engine oil oil cooler (that ones very rare) for my 66, both have been hard to find.

Stephen,  The trans guy got it for me from Summit.   He told me they offered 2 types, one with the Summit name on it and one with out.  It is larger than the original pan.  As far as your other questions, mine is a survivor (except for the trans pan) and I’m not even sure of the routing.  There is a trans cooler in front of the rad.

What aftermarket aluminum pan did you use for your 727? Did you go for the extra capacity? that helpes in keeping it cool(er), with the extra trans fluid, or so they say? Also, do you have an external trans cooler installed? The factory units mount in front of the radiator support and are hard plumbed, so I'm told. If you have one, what is the flow path of the trans fluid, does it still go through the radiator cooler then out to the trans cooler then back to the trans? Just curious on the routing for best cooling. Thanks in advance for insights.

Mike  After about 3 different trans shops to try and stop the trans leak with my survivor H, the culprit was the pan.  The final trans guy told me the original pan was good for about 3 or 4 times coming off.  After that, the edges get so warped, 3 different places couldn’t stop the leak.  I replaced the pan with an aftermarket aluminum one and presto!  no leaks.

I picked up my car this morning with its replaced engine and tranny mounts . I had an NOS RF and a used LF, plus a new tranny mount from Jeff Carter. The reason I changed them out was that
I believe the engine wassitting too low which is hopefully why my fan blade was clipping the lower part of the shroud which happened after I changed out my fan clutch!

I was very surprised at the difference the "new" engine mounts made in terms of smoothness of idle ??? All I can imagine is that the engine rocking around was modulating the throttle linkage.

But now there's another issue to be resolved. transmission fluid leaks.
My mechanic (in the top 20 of 1900 in the Bay area)  added dye to the transmission this morning.
Tomorrow morning we will look for leaks on his rack.
Does any one have suggestions for the most common source of leaks?

Also, if it does have to come out and go to a shop he recommends to be resealed, does anyone know, or is there a club publication
about the differences between a 727 and a 300H 727? (I am anticipating a call about needing a rebuild etc. I really do trust this shop, even though the owner is Corvette afficianado :-)).

   Thanks for the help.
