Hi Terry - the earlier email about Rotella's zinc content being reduced is correct. As well, remember that Rotella is formulated for diesel engines, meaning it has a very high detergent content. While a certain amount of detergent is inherent in all modern oils the amount required for diesels is considerably more, and can act as an abrasive in gasoline engines. It's therefore not a good idea to use Rotella in our old car engines.
The Joe Gibbs and other racing oils that contain zinc / ZDDP are probably best. The key is to check the product and ensure the zinc content is at least 1,600 parts per million. There was an oil in the US market for a while called Z-Alt that met that specification. However, their website is no longer working, so I don't know if the company is still in business. It was about $10/US quart as I recall.
In western Canada, Boss Lubricants makes a 15-40 weight with 1,600 PPM zinc content called CAM Oil. They list stores on their website in the four western provinces, including the NAPA stores in this region. It sells for about $7.00/liter/US quart. Their website is www.camoils.com . I don't know if it can be shipped to the US, but that would likely make it too costly anyway.
Spring was here and then winter came back this weekend!

The first signs of spring are appearing here in Dayton OH, so it's time to get the 300F out of winter storage and ready for the road. One of the first things to do is an oil change. Is Rotella still the oil of preference for our old style engines? Terry McTaggart
