Hi, Tomas: I just completed repainting my 1964 300K convertible with the new water-based paint required in CA. I'm not satisfied that the results of the process I used will be an exact match to the club color standard. The standard seems to be a set of original 4" X 4" steel squares from Chrysler with the original primer and paint applied. Gil Cunningham, Chief Judge, retains these. This is the process I used: I borrowed a large vinyl color page of color T-Roman Red Poly--from a 1964 Chrysler salesman's book. My painter placed a color scanner on the sheet and his computer compared it to similar colors stored in his computer using ColorNet, a du Pont software program. It came up with the closest match being Dark Firethorn-a 1976 GM color offered across the line. I don't think the scanner scans for iridescent/"poly"/metalflake content and Firethorn contained coarse aluminum. My sample page indicated low poly content and of much finer grade so I asked the painter to substitute fine aluminum for the coarse and reduce the quantity of the metal powder. He changed to fine aluminum but failed to cut the quantity-it still looks OK. In retrospect, I would have needed to help him with the math as the original coarse aluminum component was 18% of total volume. I had the painter shoot some samples on special 4"X6" sample cards and we compared them to the sample page and it appeared the match was imperfect, but OK. At his point, a skilled painter with great color discernment might have engaged in further meddling with the formula to come closer to the sample page. Ideally, each modification to the base formula would be compared to the sample page (or, better yet, to the club standard) until any difference was not discernable. Time and space make this alternative unfeasible for most of us. Differences in gloss, lighting angle, poly content & etc. make eyeball comparisons difficult, especially to we males who are somewhat known for our color-blindness. My friend, the K-Maniac, actually has a door from a '64 Chrysler 300K with original faded and oxidized TT paint. Chris lent me the door and, with a little effort, the oxidized layer was removed with a mildly aggressive polish to reveal the beautiful Roman Red Poly below. Comparisons of the polished door paint, the sales manual color page and the 4x6 sample card show that each is slightly different. On the attached photo, the upper RH is the door, the lower RH is the sample sheet and the LH is the sample card from the painter. A picture of the finished hood and fender is also attached. To me, the sample card and end product could be a little darker to match the polished area on the old door, but I am very happy with the color as I'm sure those folks that bought any GM product in Firethorn Red in 1976 were. Someday, we shall see how the International Club judges' trained eyes discern the attempt at duplicating the 50-year-old baked enamel (?) formula. It seems entirely possible that some paint color labs have gone through this process. The Auto Color Library seems to offer any color in any type of paint. See: http://www.tcpglobal.com/aclchip.aspx?image=1964-Chrysler-pg01.jpg At that site, 1964 Chrysler Roman Red Poly (Ditzler 71393) and 1976-77 Oldsmobile Firethorn Poly (Ditzler 2811) look to be the same, but our computer monitors and color printers cannot be depended on to make a close match. A comparison of the tinting used to achieve those two colors in the original enamel or acrylic would be interesting. I note at the Auto Color Library site that they show two different paint colors for code PP-1 for '60 Chryslers. For Chryslers the PP-1 color is Toreador Red Poly. For Imperials, PP-1 is Regal Red and quite a bit different. Be careful to try and match the Chrysler color, only. You may be able to find untouched and unfaded places on your car. Those would be good places to use as references for a color scanner if you have that technology available to you. Underneath/behind the power brake booster can be a good place if the car has been repainted under the hood and in the trunk. It would be helpful to you to have a member with a '60 Chrysler in original Toreador Red Poly to take it to a friendly paint shop and have an unfaded section of it scanned and a suggested equivalent defined. That would give your painter a place to start. The components and tints used to make my Firethorn included (in descending order of quantity) Binder1, Viscosity Balancer, Fine Aluminum, Maroon, Red Oxide, White LS, Dark Violet (!), Black LS, Brightness Adjuster and Orange Yellow.
