Bob Walker at Hot Heads  www.hothemiheads.com  in North Carolina  (336)352-4866 has the nice stainless steel plugs with rubber o-ring seal and internal cross-bar that pulls it into the block on my 392 hemi.  Although he specializes in hemi's, it might be worth a call to see if he has a similar plug for your engine.   The sealing surface in the block were a bit rough and corroded, so we also smeared the sealing surfaces with black Permatex silicone sealant.

I always found using the brass ones over the steel much better and I also would use a little of the old Indian Head gasket sealant on them helped.

Standard plugs are very reliable unless improperly installed.  Use caution when installing, but no real tricks are required.

Is there a replacement expansion plug ( freeze plug) for RB blocks that would be more reliable than those dish type welsh plugs?

I thought someone a few months ago posted something about a plug that has some kind of mechanical holder built in the plug, grabs the inside of the block like a block heater plug maybe??

I was road testing my F , one plug came off while passing a vehicle at 80mph...makes quite a big cloud of white smoke!
