Hi All,
Only time I remember ever having trouble with one of these steering
couplers was on a '66 Imperial
with tilt and telescope column. The coupler somewhat
disintegrated.
I think we patched it up somehow and it did not actually break.
Did drive the car afterwards for a while. Still own the car.
I somehow remember that at the time we thought it had something to do
with it being a tilt/telescope
column. Another thing about this car is based upon what I
know it may be a very high mileage car
maybe around 200k and never restored. Otherwise it had held up
pretty well.
Maybe based upon the mileage it had an excuse to go.
Regards,
Nancy Kramer

Not to detract from the significance of Larry's message,
the steering coupler "rag joint" Larry refers to was first used
in
1965. Before 1965,
the steering shaft connection was entirely different,
no rag joint used.
So if you have a Letter Car older than the L,
not to worry.
If you have an L or 66 or so on, give that
coupler a check -- it is easy to do and
well worth the effort.

In all the years in the Club, I believe  this topic has never been
discussed.
I parked the 66 in the garage after a 380 mile round trip to the home of
Sea Biscuit yesterday (Go California Chrome this Saturday!!)
Started the car today to go buy gas and all of a sudden there was no
connection between the steering wheel and the steering box. Â Under that
shop light looking thingy is a rag joint and but two bolts hold the upper
steering shaft to the short bottom part that turns the steering box. Â
The two bolts have nuts and are supposed to have cotter keys to prevent
the nut from falling off. Â One of them had no cotter key and the nut had
fallen off. Thank you God for waiting until I was safely parked in my
garage for the incident to manifest. Â Have you ever looked at your rag
joint?
