Hello, everyone:
In refurbishing the engine parts for ol' 292, I noticed a difference between the valve springs. Eight are painted green and 8 are painted red and spiral in opposite directions. The green springs are a little larger in free height and inner diameter than the red.
Also, although the Service Bulletin for the E shows serge dampers for both intake and exhaust valve springs, my E (built on Jan. 19, 1959) has only 8 that fit into the green spring only and not the red. There is no damper wear on the inside of the red spring.
I disassembled this engine some thirty years ago and have since lost my notes on where these springs go, green or red on the exhaust
valves?
My guess is green springs on the intake valves since the red paint on the other springs is all but gone, probably from the heat of the exhaust valves. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Best,
Ron
