Wow! This brings back bad memories! The first time I had a problem was a customers 300 L convertible. I had led a charmed life until that day. I pulled the right rear axle to replace leaking oil seal and the thrust pin dropped into the lower housing. I fished it out after a long trial and error tool changing strategy.
[These are normally held in place with a roll pin through the center.] The roll pin had broken and the pin almost followed the axle out. After the seal repair I attached the pin to the axle end with heavy fibrous grease. This actually worked.
