This is very good . If resistor opens when points open (V high ) to regulate , amps drop to very low , volts drop it repeats . The resistor if in circuit keeps some lower output when the points open avoiding full off state . Makes perfect sense . Those resistors give trouble like this under a VR for generator too . I have done the same thing in those .Solder , not even knowing about this bulletin . Probably the reason regulators " fail " . Very poor quality resistors rust disconnects them , connection to spiral wire is only a crimp , rust breaks connection
