Fern I paid $700 for a 3.91 ratio 8 3/4 489 case Sure Grip about a year ago and it was what I would consider a good deal at that time, since I saw plenty of prices higher than that for Sure Grip 3rd members while I was looking (boy times have changed.) Be careful as to the casting #: The 742 and 489 are the ones you want, and the 742 would be more appropriate for a letter car since they were the ones that would have been originally installed on a Letter Car (at least the later ones.) The other thing is that the 742 case is more easily rebuilt than the 489. You will see sometimes 741 case Sure grips on Craigslist, et al but those are small pinion rears and not what you want for your Letter Car, IMHO. Keith Sent from my BlackBerry 10 smartphone.
Fern A sure grip are pretty hard to find, usually in the $300 to $500 range for the third member. Expect to pay more for a "Good" one that shouldn't need to be rebuilt. Check your local Truck/Auto wreckers for one out of a Police car or Pickup. If your going to swop out the whole differential housing with brakes consider a 9 1/4" 74 Imperial with disc's brakes. Or a Dana 60, etc., etc., there are many options out there to consider. Anything for a big Chrysler will be hard to find, and will cost you dearly! Good Luck! Best Regards, Stephen A.
