Re: [Chrysler300] Octane Booster For Real Gas And 10% Alcohol Gas

In response to Gloria's original question, I am located in west central Illinois.  I have access to non-alcohol "premium" gas in Keokuk, IA rated at 91 octane.  Around here, 87 is regular grade, 89 is mid grade and not always available, and 91 octane is "premium" and also not always available at all stations (many are 87 and 89 only, with all grades having up to 10% ethanol).  Keokuk is a 15 minute drive.
In Keokuk is a O'Reilly's auto parts store (yeah, a generic type) that handles an octane booster for "off road use only".  It is not cheap but is one that works.  Most I have tried in the past in my 300-K with the single four barrel carb do not do anything noticeable to reduce the preignition knock, but this stuff, coupled with the 91 octane, no ethanol stuff does work.  It is "Hyper fuel Octane booster" and is listed as a "racing formula".  It is produced by Hyper Lube products out of Redmond, WA.  It does NOT replace a lead product to protect the exhaust valve seats--only boosts octane.
My '64 with the 413 is rather sensitive to knock.  Now, based on memory which may be fuzzy anymore, when I was around Grandpa's 1964 New Yorker with 413, he had to use the 98 octane from the Deep Rock station to avoid knock even in the "good old days".  I think the 413 with its combustion chamber design was more sensitive to knock than the old hemi's ever were.  The compression in my 300-K when checked some years ago was in the 150 to 155 lbs per square inch for each cylinder.  It is not low compression.
Maybe this will help someone else.  Around here, non-ethanol gas is scarce.  I use it in my outboard, my chainsaws, and weedeaters as well as my old Chryslers.  By the way, many years ago I fitted my '68 New Yorker (440 cu in) with a Holley water injection unit to take care of ping on acceleration.  No such critter made anymore.  It, too, works.

I've had good luck with a product made by Applied Chemical Specialties in Omaha. I think it's Internet only but they make a number of products worth taking a look at. As far as Octane boosting and tetraethyl replacement, their "No-Rosion Fuel System Octane Booster" would be the product appropriate for this discussion, although they also make a HyperKuhl product for cooling system flushes and another to reduce operating Temps (Ala' Redline "Water Wetter".)

You may want to take a look. Again, we have virtually no options here in Maine for non-ethanol gas and 99% of the stations offer only 91 octane....

Subject: [Chrysler300] Octane Booster For Real Gas And 10% Alcohol Gas

Hi all,

Thanks to a member in Pa., we've now located non-alcohol gas at a reasonable price about an hour away from where we live.

But now we have another problem:

1.  How to keep 10% alcohol 93 octane from pinging our F's engine, especially on hot days (which is when we drive it).
2.  How to keep this "100% real gas" with lower octanes from ping our F's engine too.

What to do?

Recall that all gas octane today is what the Fed. calls "research octane", not what it was when we were driving our 300's back in the 60's with no 413's pinging at all.

So even when one is lucky enough to find local non-alcohol gas it is often not today's "higher test" motor fuel.  It is more often today's "regular" [say 87] or maybe a "mid grade" octane say [91.5].

Those of you who are octane boosting alcohol and/or non-alcohol gas - what works best for you with BOTH of these fuels?  A product that is readily available at local car stores is best but Internet orders can work too.  Let's hear from you back to the server on what you are doing that works well, especially on hot days.  We can all benefit from your experiences.

Thanks a lot to everyone who contributes to this discussion.

Maybe we can somehow beat this corn/octane disaster yet!
