I have a somewhat different opinion on DVAP.
I was out there in January, visiting both their Phoenix
and Casa Grande locations. In each case, I found them relatively pleasant. They
have the most organized yard I've ever seen. After walking the yard for many
hours, I let them know which parts I wanted. They let me know the
approximate price on each item, which in some cases was a bit high, in
other cases it was OK.
I went out there with their parts puller guy and watched
him carefully remove all the mouldings, taillight housings and stone guards that
I wanted. When they totaled the price, I asked them if they could reduce
the price a bit. So they knocked off 10%. I paid them immediately.
The next day, I went back for some additional pieces. They
recognized me and this time, the prices were quite reasonable.
I think they may come across as 'surly' because a lot of
people jerk them around and never call back or never follow up on the items that
they want.

damage
Hi John,
You may already be settled on your fender source, but I thought I'd chirp
in here. I know a number of us have gotten parts from DVAP over the years, and
I think the consensus has been that they are normally not fun or reliable to
deal with. They seem to take on a bit of a surly attitude with a lot of us,
and they're pricey too - which may not matter in your case because of the
insurance coverage.
Somewhere in the Phoenix environs you will also find Hidden Valley Auto
Parts, and those guys are a completely opposite story. Reasonable pricing and
very personalized service - at least in my experiences with them. I bought a
complete floor (among other things) from Hidden Valley for my '57 300C
(actually a '58 Dodge 4-door floor - same thing), and they even got on the
phone with my body shop guys to ask them exactly how to cut it out in the most
desired way. Presuming these folks are still around, I know you'd really like
working with them if they have what you need.
Make sure your insurance company treats you right, John. It's their job
to make you very happy when the job is done.
How about posting the result when you're all done with the repair. Tell
us who you have insurance with and how well they treated your claim. We'd all
love to hear how you come out. For most of us, we just keep paying some pretty
serious premiums and we have no idea what will happen when the tables are
turned and we are at the mercy of our insurer.
Good luck!
