Quick comment, Dave..you do not want grease or lubriplate in there; too viscous , it makes it whip(winds up against grease friction, releases , then jumps/snaps ahead , repeat. Needle waves up and down..especially on cold day ) ; It might work at first...but.....I have found lubriplate to be greatly over rated. Look at your stuck door lock mechanisms, or power window mechanisms , , white crud gone to solid is lubriplate . Very much in vogue in 60's. It gets hard as a rock with time, drys out. . Speedo lube is good --it is a graphite powder you wipe onto inner cable once housing is clear. A lot like lock lube, graphite dust in very light oil suspension. . Personally I have found that plain light oil , like 3 in one or 10 weight dripped into housing hung vertically works perfectly . Most common point of speedo head bind is not the inside speedo stuff ( that plastic stuff inside strips usually, if odo jammed) it is the bushing right where the cable end plugs in goes dry. A screw comes out of side , you drip some 10w on the felt in there(some of them) , then work it around the bushing. It frees up. It causes jumping / noise too. Of course easier with speedo out. Have 67 dart convert with 300k miles been into cable twice, speedo 3x. Would jump when cold or just erratically, drove me crazy....taking in and out drives you crazy.Especailly on say an F. . Works great now, all original , or parts car stuff..but it had all those issues ; learned not to mess with insides after ruining more than one speedo looking for a bind. Kind of thing best left alone if it is working inside--like a clock to me. . And be sure that bushing spins totally freely. Rest of it usually ok . If not attacked by a restorer. Instead of lubriplate for dab on, I have been using chassis grease , or recently really good stuff is synthetic Mobil 1 rear axle lube..it is 75W oil, bulletproof synthetic, will never disintegrate or solidify, in small plastic lab squeeze bottle. It stay where you put it.... but will run into 3D mechanisms. Great luck with this so far ,But too thick for speedo cables. Back to 1900,= "thick oil" , -----but synthetic is probably forever stable. Worth the $. Probably 0W synthetic would be best for speedo cable too. No temp issues. Lubriplate would be my best guess, the same thing as engine assembly lube. My speedo on the F started acting up just the other day, Had gotten the car out to get it cleaned up for a car show yesterday, which I ended up staying home from because of the lousy weather. On a short drive it started squealing like a stuck pig so I had to disconnect it at the head. Will have to remove it and lube it up good as well but I fear the problem is in the head it self. Not looking forward to having to remove that from the dash, for sure!!
