Thanks John, I absolutely understand and agree!It was precisely that problem which caused me to send it to Philbin for rebuild a couple of years ago. Before the rebuild, when I tried to set to 650, it would take off and go right up to 900 as soon as got it over 600 or so.
It seems to hunt by several hundred rpm right now. This problem will need to wait a bit as I am also in the throes of replacing the starter and I have to teach a class on Monday. I am also suspicious of a continuing vacuum leak also. I resealed base gaskets of both AFB’s (8 separate surfaces) . The only other place I can imagine is the intake manifold to block. I have ordered new base gaskets, but I have been unable to locate an insulator/spacer which goes beneath the carvb, and one of mine is cracked (leaky?) so I need to replace it. If I removed the intake manifold, I may just go ahead and replace that flaky camshaft I have and install the correct 300 H camshaft I bought from Fern last year. The springs and weights take off the rest location at certain engineered rpm, so idle must be chrysler spec . And parts not worn . That spec varies with different engine setups / distributors. If you raise idle , it can get into an erratic unstable area ?

Thanks Gary, as I said in one of my responses, I did have it rebuilt by the Philbin Group and it looked to be a comprehensive job. It makes it hard for me to think it’s a dis problem for that reason, but it is on my list to validate by substituing another distributor. As someone else said, the fact that the RPM “hunts” between 600 and 700 rpm engine speed makes the distributor suspect.

I highly recommend any old distributor with unknown history, MUST be
rebuilt and setup on a dist. machine. I highly recommend the Philbin Group in
Portland OR, 1-800-869-7301, talk to Mark. If I remember correctly, The charge
for basic rebuild was $75. Also, they can rebuild or replace vacuum
advance. I installed and recommend electronic ignition.
Note: with electronic ignition you must pay special attention to the
voltage out put at the resistor. To high and you will fry the electronic
component. I may mention Philbin is fast and courteous. I am sure there
are many qualified to do rebuilds. Any of them are UPS away.

Michael,
A "hunting" condition at any idle speed can be caused by a defect in the
centrifugal spark advance mechanism in the distributor, usually a weak
(stretched) or broken spring. Don't overlook that as a possibility
after checking more obvious things that are easier to get to.

Yes, it idles especially rough the lower it goes. It also seems to “hunt”
between 500 and 600.
I discovered a couple of vacuum leaks yesterday and thought I had fixed
them by removing the base gaskets from the carburetors, cleaning them, and
forming a very small (cross section-like a pencil lid) of form-a -gasket
on all 8 surface and reassembled them. It’s hard to believe I still have
a vacuum leak but certainly possible. There was also an old smog kit tap into
the intake manifold I resealed.

Not sure what you mean by 'marginal'. Does
the car run rough and act like it's gonna stall ? If so, I would attach a vacuum
gauge to the intake and see what's going on. Problem is either a vacuum leak, or
something is out of whack in your carbs. It's not Ethanol gas.

it sure is marginal at that speed. 800 feels better, but I don’t understand
