I concur with all those stating that the core support and other areas behind
the grille that can be seen from the exterior of the car were painted black
over the body color (except black body color obviously). 1962 should be
the same as 1963. I have done a fairly careful analysis of 1963 models.
While after 50 years (or even 20-30 years) the paint appears to be flat
black, given the age and weather/road rash beating it gets behind the
grille, for 1963 at least it appears the paint is actually the same
semi-gloss black enamel that was used extensively elsewhere on underhood
components. There is some variation of course as to what was painted and
perhaps by assembly line as well (for non 300 models). I also agree that it
was rather halfass haphardardly applied - but by brush not sprayed! It was
applied after the body was assembled, but before the horns, A/C
receiver/dryer etc. were installed. A spray gun would have oversprayed too
many adjacent areas (i.e. the assembly line evidently did not take the time
to mask off the car). This, at least, is what I have found for 1963 I
suspect there was not a lot of consistency in application or technique.

I have parted several 60-61 Chryslers through the years, 2 of them New
Yorkers as well as Newports to obtain various parts for our F.
All of them had the rad support blacked out. I still have several of those
supports that clearly show the black paint over various colored original
parts.
Were not the F’s carpeted from the factory when new?
I know the 61’s and 62’s had rubber mats and the 63’s and 63’s had a carpet
mat’l pf sorts.

My 300F is the reference car for that model year for the 300 Club, and is an
original 29K mile car. I bought the car from the first owner, Roland Funk,
many years ago now. But when I received the car, Roland told me some things
he did to make it more to his liking. First, he carpeted the trunk floor (a
car of that stature should not have a rubber mat he reasoned, so he fixed
it!), second, he chromed the air cleaner housings and the valve cover
breather cap and the power steering pump cap and he painted the front face
of the radiator support black since he said he hated seeing white behind the
beautiful grille when he bought it. Since he was a painter at a Buick
dealership, he knew what he was doing. So given his story at least, it
supports that the radiator support was not painted black at the factory - at
least on his car.

Hey, don't drag me into this. My car's paint is not original and the engine
compartment was restored. My opinion is the 60-62 cars that aren't black
should have the front of their radiator supports sloppily painted black, so
you don't see light body color through the grille. I did paint mine black.
Noel takes and submits dozens of pictures of 300s at our meets, but tends to
miss mine. Probably because it's a driver and he sees it around at events
near home fairly regularly.

Looking back at photos of several Meets, I'm seeing mostly body color for
the '62 300s.
For the '60 and '61 300 cars, I'm seeing mostly fully black painted radiator
supports. This includes one all-original Alaskan White 300F coupe from NY,
that drove to both our Mystic and Macungie Meets. Gil Cunningham also has
the full radiator support in his blue 300F convertible painted black -
looking back at Chattanooga. Can't tell by my car, which has it painted
black, but then Andy Mikonis' G coupe has it body color Alaskan White.
