Apparently the starter relay is working OK. It does need a good ground from the “Neutral Safety Switch” which is mounted on the tranny. As the switch and wire are exposed to the elements, you may not be getting a good ground with the selector in Park or Neutral. The ignition switch can be tested by observing Voltage to ground at the ST tab on the relay. You should get 12 Volts+ when the key is in the “Start” position. The neutral safety switch and its connection can be tested by jumpering the GRD tab on the relay to a good ground and then try the starter switch. Be sure the tranny is in Park when you do this so that your Brute does not motor off on its own. I think the Neutral Safety Switches are common items at the auto parts store.

On our ‘64K, the wire going down to the tranny starts in the loom running across the firewall and more or less in the center behind the engine. Two wires come out of the loom there—one to the low oil pressure switch and the other to the Neutral Safety Switch.

This morning I started the62 300 sport and it cranked and fired right up. I took a short drive for about 10 to 15 minutes, came home , shut off the car. Right away I went to start it again and nothing at all. Didn't click, didn't turn over. This was around 9:00 AM.

I turned the key to Run, opened the hood and put a screwdriver between the 2 terminals on the Starter Relay. The car started right up.
The Ignition Switch, the Starter Relay and the Starter all worked fine on the first start. Which one was likely to fail on my attempt to restart ? What causes the component to work, not work, work again, not work ?
I was busy all day so the car sat all day. A few minutes ago ( 5:40 PM ) I went out and it cranked and started right up. If I take a drive it will probably do it again. It did the exact same thing yesterday.

Any tips and or suggestions on fixing this intermittent problem ?
