Rich, I do recall I was so exasperated the last thing in the world I wanted to do was to pull the engine out of that 55 Dodge and study the hole in the crankshaft. I have no idea what was hollow, I just accepted the junkyard guys explanation, but something pumped a helluva lot of oil on the ground! Another article indicates it was stand ard on Dodges and optional on De Sotos. I recall a couple of customers had HyDrive Plymouths in the 50’s and an oil change took 10 quarts—11 with a filter. I did not recall that the engine oil was exchanged with the tranny/torque converter through the crankshaft but that makes sense. I doubt if the crank was hollow, but it sure could have large drilled oil passages to take oil in and out of the torque converter. It was a long, rough road from the MoPar Fluid Drive flathead sixes and eights, through the Prestomatic, HyDrive and PowerFlite to the wonderful and strong TorqueFlite first found in a few of our B’s in late 1956. Some history indicates Carl Kiekhaefer helped Chrysler move to a three-speed automatic transmission for some low-speed “dig”. Now Chrysler is up to a nine-speed and still having problems: http://tinyurl.com/m9pmvx9 Current 300’s have an eight -speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic tranny (isn’t that a clever name?) http://www.allpar.com/cars/chrysler/300C/2015.html With a round knob shifter. Sounds pretty boring as compared to dagger-on--the-dash (1955), push-buttons (1956-1964) or illuminated shift quadrant in the console. Soon, shifting will be controlled on a touch-screen. What really happened as I now recall it was that I was given a 1955 Dodge sedan. I paid $5 to rent a towbar, hence a $5 car. It was said to run rough, and that ultimately was the car with the missing conrod, pistons and half a cylinder skirt. In the Dodge Hemi engine. I then bought a junkyard DeSoto Hemi to replace it,year unk. The wrecking yard assured me it would interchange if I swapped some parts around. I recall the engine mounts caused me to more. I rebuilt the DeSoto engine to the extent of putting new rings in it but nothing else-no valve job. I finally got the engine in and was looking forward to a smooth running Dodge. Then it developed a massive pool of oil under the car and I shut it down. It turned out my DeSoto engine had a hollow crankshaft which was there because it shared oil with the transmission (????). I recall discussing options such as plugging the end of the DeSoto crankshaft, swapping crankshafts etc. , but I sold it to the junkyard for $15 and they picked it up. My earliest adventure into cars! I also pulled apart a nice running 392, left in pieces in basement. He “got rid of that” too….this bug bites early , before your brain has grown up. It reminds me of the 55 Desoto Hemi I bought back in the early 60’s to put in a Dodge sedan I had. The PO said it ran pretty rough and needed a tuneup. It did run rough! It had had a piston and connecting rod removed, because the cylinder wall was broken out in one area. I was always curious what that was all about. It sure looked nice though!
