The 1955-1958 hemi engines of the Chrysler 300’s were sequentially numbered, typically with the prefix like 3NE57, followed by a four-digit number. The first engine in 1957 would have been stamped 3NE571001 on top of the block, just behind the water pump. In 1955, there did not seem to be much effort made to install the lowest available s/n engine in the next C-300 that came down the line. The relationship between s/n & VIN for the 1956-58 300’s was more consistent. As it was necessary to build more engines than cars, there was always a variance between the last four digits of the car’s VIN and the last four digits of the engine s/n. I believe it is highly unlikely that any 300 has an engine s/n precisely the same as the VIN. The engine s/n on my early 1955 C-300 was 100 LESS than the VIN. The engine s/n was generally hand written on the IBM build card so club archives reflect the s/n of the engine originally installed. The data below is from member records of the Chrysler 300 Club, Inc. and reflect significant anomalies—most likely due to block replacements over the years. The data may also reflect errors of reading the engine s/n as it is hard to read under the water-pump plumbing. C owners are asked to contribute their data to this study which I have done on my own. It does appear that the nominal value of the difference between engine s/n less the VIN is about 25-50. The relationship of the engine s/n and the VIN as shown on the IBM card defines the “Matching Number” for hemi-engined 1955-58 cars. The 413 CID engine blocks of 1959-65 were not stamped with individual serial numbers but were stamped with information as to the type of engine and the engine’s build date so matching numbers for these engines is rather undefined except for the fact that the engine should be of the correct type and its build date should precede the car build date. Also are the VIN, engine, body and frame numbers all the same or different?
