Hi, “Lucky”: One thing comes to mind if you are trying to attach the proper steering wheel to the proper shaft. If you are trying to fit a steering wheel from a different year car, all bets are off. There is only one position where the splined hub of the wheel will properly fit over the splined stub of the shaft. You can detect this by observing one solid interruption of the splines on the stub and finding the matching “missing” two-wide solid spline in the hub. These two blanked-off splines must be matched for proper installation of the steering wheel even if the steering wheel is in the wrong position when the front road wheels are straight ahead. Making the steering wheel match the road wheel position requires adjusting front suspension components. If all fits well, the steering wheel will feel firm, even without the nut and the attaching nut should fully engage the threads atop the shaft.
