I had to look this up as I thought of Flemish at the start of this: Flemish is a variant of Dutch. Sent from my BlackBerry 10 smartphone.
It would have been Flemish, although John spoke French as well. He was Belgian by birth. On our way out to the meet in Newark, California, we stopped in a town in Utah (Escalara, I think) and while we were wiping the car down these two guys were standing there conversing in a language I didn't recognize. John told me they were talking about us and the L. He proceeded to start speaking to them in the same language (Flemish) and actually embarrassed them quite a bit, although I never did find out what it was that they had said that they thought we wouldn't understand. We wound up having dinner with them and I didn't understand one word that was said, but every once in a while they would all look at me and laugh which, of course, made me wonder what had been said.
