Good point. I personally don't use timing marks to time my engines but if you want to ensure your mark is accurate you can pull out the plug in #1 cylinder and either use a TDC tool (if you have one) or even feel for TDC with a heavy wire or plastic stick while someone turns the crank slowly by hand. warning: Don't use anything that will break off or damage the piston or spark plug threads if it binds. (don't use a screwdriver in other words)
Once you are sure the piston is exactly at the top of it's travel, look to see if the groove on the balancer lines up with 0 degrees on the timing mark tab. If it doesn't and you're sure you're at TDC, your balancer may have wandered.
