Thinking more on the Australian wheels, I now think the 6 1/2? sports rims
came out first (in ?71) and were replaced in later years by the 6? which
allowed them to be optioned on the standard 185 tyre.  That?s why the 6 ½?
rims are harder to find.  A 7? mag wheel was available for wider tyres.  If
the two sports rim sizes were never available at the same time there may
well have been a design change in the rim profile, explaining the difference
I found.  Looking through my spares, I have found trim rings used with these
rims with two different clip mechanisms that I hadn?t noticed before.
(Neither clip is like the 300C)  Maybe to suit the different rims?  The trim
rings would look wrong if there was a gap as they are supposed to tidy up
the look of the outer rim.

 

Bearing that in mind, you may want to double check the hubcaps you have were
used at the same time as your rim?s manufacture.

I'm pondering the same thing and do not have a full answer yet.  My details
are a bit different, but wheel cover issues are the same.  My car is a '65
Plymouth Barracuda originally equipped with 13" x 4.5" rims and full disc
wheel covers.  A few years ago I located a set of 14" x 5.5" rims from a
later model Barracuda Formula S.  I found the same design wheel covers for
the bigger wheels and they fit as you describe with a gap between the outer
rim of the cover and the wheel, also seeming to be very securely held in
place.  I haven't yet determined if the fit is the same as would be if I had
wheels from a '65 Formula S.  I haven't yet talked to someone who could
positively answer that.  The only comment I've heard is that , as you said,
might promote some brake cooling.  That makes sense to me as in my case disc
brakes became an option on the Barracuda in '65, though I believe it was a
dealer installation only in that year.

Getting close to finishing my resto and fitted the hubcaps to my wheels and
found something odd.  Here in Australia, I used Valiant sports rims (see
https://www.carsguide.com.au/car-news/my-chrysler-valiant-charger-27148 for
photo) in the 14x6.5?size for the optional larger Charger tyres - which is
pretty rare (plenty at 14x6?).  They were sandblasted and powder coated.

 

When I fitted the cap I found there was a gap of about 1/8? between the
outer edge of the cap and the rim.  After a bit of head scratching, I fitted
the cap to a 14x6? rim I had and found the cap fitted flush against the rim.
After more head scratching, I found there is a difference in width between
the outside flange and the depression where the cap tangs drop into.  This
is the part where the tyre bead seats.  The rims have a JJ profile if that
helps.  I have no idea why this part of two virtually identical rims should
be different.  They should have just been ½? wider in the centre.

 

If it isn?t an issue  - great.  You don?t really notice it unless you look
for it and there may be a bonus in the gap will let air out helping the
brakes cool. 

 

The hubcap seems to hold the same but I am a bit concerned the hubcap might
be less stable with this gap.  Has anyone else come across this issue before
when using alternative rims?
