Assume your concern was 235/75 not 835 (no such animal). The
235/75R14 is theoretically closest to overall diameter of original
8.50-14 (28.3 in nominal) and remember the J had 7.60-15 which is
slightly taller still (28.8-29 inches) so I doubt diameter would
be an issue. (In my previous email I mistakenly said 8.50-14 was same OD as
P235/75R14 - THIS WAS IN ERROR - I was looking at P235/75R15 at
28.3 OD which is same as 8.50-14. The correct OD for the
P235/75R14 is 27.87) Width, especially Tread Width would possibly be an issue as the
older bias tires had much narrower tread. Nominal section width of
8.50-14 is right at 8 inches but original tread width is less than
5 inches. Published section width on the American Classic
P235/75R14 is 9.25 with 6.3 tread width on a 27.87 Overall
Diameter. My guess is the main issue would be at extreme positions of steering and corner of tread on P235/75R14 might rub inner fender, but if the much taller 7.60-15 worked on the J I doubt you would have a problem since it is a combination of diameter and width you would worry about. This might be further aggravated if not stock wheel width or offset, but I will defer to someone with 300K experience with these tires. As for the P215/75R14 at 26.7 inches OD, the car will sit at least an inch lower - 0.75 difference due to tire diameter plus radials squat lower than older bias tires. Curious to what size tires & wheels are now on car and what
if any issues on clearance? Best, Ed Edward Mills
