Agree , all the retro reproduction wire clamps are junk . No spring temper , just bent wire from China . Had same experience , gave up . Many of the originals have been “sprung” by opening them too much takes steel in the wire beyond steel yield point — never work well again . You do need the right tool to control that .
Easy to ruin with pliers.I do not like look t too much but have taken to using worm drive clamps and breaking off the tail left over , right at the clamp , and putting worm underneath . Looks a lot better than 1” tail hanging offSent from my iPhone
