Just another 2¢ worth, When I had my mechanic put new brakes on our ’55 C-300, I had him replace the rear wheel bearings. This required re-setting the rear axle shims.. As an ex-machinist and excellent mechanic, he was able to properly set the system up. He ended up needing different shims to properly set the system and was able to find some expensive shims on the internet and also had a local shop create some new ones from shim stock-using gasket cutters for the holes. I feel it is an area requiring care and expertise and that the ramifications of improper process may be catastrophic. Over the years, I’ve lost two differentials and it is not a pleasant experience. You can start with same shims, then check for equal end play each axel. If done correctly, very tedious process.
